Stainless steel chimney system

The highest Almeva chimney in Europe. And below the Swiss Matterhorn.

With the construction of the new 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride II, Zermatt Bergbahnen has consistently pursued a path of greater sustainability in the Alpine region.

In order to realise the vision of a continuous year-round connection between Zermatt, Switzerland and Cervinia, Italy, the construction team was challenged with the highest construction site in Europe. At 3,883 metres above sea level, the construction was no walk in the park. The altitude and prevailing weather conditions made the construction work unique. The workers, an average of about 70 people, had to contend with wind, snow and strong temperature fluctuations, as well as thin air at an altitude of almost 4,000 m.

The entire cable car project, including the mountain stations, was built in several stages. The installation included the wiring and installation of photovoltaic panels and a flue gas system for the exhaust of the three emergency heat generators. The system has three stainless steel chimneys, with a diameter of 350 mm and lengths of 20 m. Almeva was therefore involved in the design and installation of the highest flue system in Europe.
